Smoke Dawg, Drake’s Tourmate Killed in Toronto

21-year old rapper, Smoke Dawg, who had been Drake’s tour mate and had opened for him on his 2017 European tour Boy Meets World, was shot to death in Toronto on Saturday night. A local 24-hours news channel named CP24 reported that other than Dawg (real name—Jahvante Smart), two other people were killed in the shooting. The other man has been identified as Ernest Modekwe, a 28-year old producer. He, like Smart, succumbed to his injuries but the woman is likely to survive, says the Toronto Police.

The incident occurred outside Cube nightclub in the Entertainment District sometime before 8 PM in the evening. Drake paid homage and tribute to the young Canadian musician via a post on his Instagram page. Nathan Miller, a director who had made a movie about the rap scene in the Great White North featuring the rapper, also posted about his tragic death on social media platforms. The young rapper, who could have had a bright future in the music industry, died shortly after XXXTentacion, another rapper, was killed in South Florida. The tragic deaths of these young men have shocked the industry, occurring at an interval of only two weeks. The up and coming Canadian music sensation had tweeted only a while ago about his new musical album named “Fountain Freestyle”.

Smoke Dawg is popularly known for his 2015 remix album “Trap House” which featured French Montana. He was also a part of the Halal Gang which is a rap collective featuring contemporary and fellow rap artists like Mo-G, Safe and Puffy L’z. Dawg has left behind and is survived by his infant 1-year old daughter, his 13 siblings and his parents. A candlelight vigil at the Metropolitan Church (Church Street and Queen Street East) in Toronto is supposed to be held on Monday at 8.30 PM ET.
